In May, right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and lockdown in the UK, G7th are launching a new special edition Performance 3 capo with Gordon Giltrap to support The University Hospitals Birmingham Charity, UK, part of the NHS, with a £10 donation for every sale of one of these engraved capos.
The Gordon Giltrap Special Edition Performance 3 capos are available in Silver, Satin Black and 18kt Gold Plate.
Gordon is a somewhat unsung hero of the British guitar scene (well, less unsung since he was awarded his MBE in the 2019 News Year Honours!), so let us tell you a little more about how Gordon and Nick Campling (G7th capo designer) know each other...
"Gordon and I have known each other for the best part of 50 years. I first went to see him play in a pub in Braintree, Essex, because I had heard that he played a guitar built by John Bailey. I was planning to buy a second-hand one myself… and I still have it. I later booked Gordon to play at my school Folk Club, which I ran. It was an odd concert: a small group of teenagers huddled in the big, mostly empty school hall because the smaller rooms were already booked! I remember the show well though; it didn't matter that there weren't many of us, Gordon didn't fail to impress. (A later guest at the Folk Club was another UK guitar legend, John Pearse… but I digress - a story for another time!)
Anyway, Gordon and I have kept vaguely in touch over the years. I booked him again to play at my University when I was studying engineering. I also saw the Giltrap Band at the Key Theatre in our home town of Peterborough, and solo at the Acoustic Avalon show in Leicester ran by Noel Sheehan (G7th Managing Director), and many more times. When I designed the first Performance capo, I sent one to Gordon, which he loved, and he's used my capos ever since!
Recently, as we have been talking to our friends and artists about how we can support each other during this difficult period, he and I got our heads together. While we were talking, we had the bright idea of creating a signature capo that we could use to raise money for the NHS. As a result, we are now producing the Gordon Giltrap "Heartsong" capo inspired by Gordon's most famous composition "Heartsong" which was the theme tune to the BBC's Holiday Programme."
Over the years, Gordon has worked with an amazingly broad range of artists, from rock musicians such as Brian May, Rick Wakeman and Midge Ure to the jazz virtuoso Martin Taylor, the classical guitarist Raymond Burley and the London Symphony Orchestra.
One of the great musical milestones in Gordon's life and career was to be invited in 2019 by one of the great icons of rock music, Pete Townshend, to play on a track for the new album by the legendary Who. The track SHE ROCKED MY WORLD featured acoustic guitars from Pete with Gordon adding his own signature riffs to Pete's unique playing. Pete described Gordon's contribution as "classic GG".
