"Tampa Red with one foot in New Orleans and the other in Waikiki." – Blues In Britain
Andres Roots is a slide guitarist, songwriter and bandleader based in Tartu, Estonia. Combining pre-war blues with swing and 1960's rock, his music has received airplay on five continents, featured in films and TV series, and earned him a Golden Disc award for 2016's chart-topping "Roots Music" LP.
Roots is currently active as a solo performer, as one half of the guitar-and-drums duos Andres Roots & Raul Terep and Andres Roots & Anneli Kadakas, and as a member of the four-piece Sawmill Roots Orchestra. In October 2017, he won the first Estonian Blues Challenge with the Tammepõld, Roots & Kadakas trio, along with the Best Guitarist award – the band will be representing Estonia at the European Blues Challenge in Hell, Norway in March 2018.
In addition to his native Estonia, Roots has toured in the UK, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Sweden and Finland and played and/or recorded with the likes of Honeyboy Edwards (USA), Bert Deivert (USA), Dave Arcari (UK), Steve Lury (UK), Richard Townend (UK), Ismo Haavisto (FIN), Black River Bluesman (FIN), Bottleneck John (SWE), and many others.
"One wouldn’t immediately think of Estonia as a blues hotbed, but cast those narrow-minded notions aside and listen to Andres Roots (yep, it’s his real surname too). This is a man who can play the blues." – Rhythms Magazine, Australia
